Beads have been in evidence as part of human culture for as long as 80,000 years. They have been used by diverse civilisations for adornment, meditation, counting, currency, religious and social ceremony and to represent wealth and status.

The word "bead" comes from the Anglo-Saxon "bede", meaning prayer.

Beadwork is common to every continent and most cultures of the past and present. Many of the skills and techniques used to make glass beads were closely guarded secrets for centuries, with anybody who revealed them risking death! Even today, some secrets are still highly valued in some cultures.
